The GENIVI Alliance is a world-wide consortium of automakers, software suppliers, and hardware vendors that is changing the way in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) software is developed and delivered in the market.  Consisting of over 130 members from every major automotive geography, the GENIVI community is leveraging Linux and open source software to reduce development costs and time to market, saving automakers and their suppliers valuable time and money.

GENIVI's work is world-wide, but it has pockets of operations in the Bay-area of San Francisco and in various European hubs (Munich, Paris, etc.).  As a not for profit, US corporation, GENIVI supplements its member volunteers with full- or partial-time contractors with the specialized skills to perform essential work to advance our mission of developing and driving adoption of open, automotive software.  Below are the positions that are currently open.  Questions or applications can be sent to the GENIVI Executive Director (scrumb at genivi dot org) and must include indication of the position, a current CV/Resume and a brief description of why you believe you qualify for the position.

Software Product Development General Manager

The GENIVI Alliance has successful introduced Linux and open source software into the automotive software industry.  The GENIVI Development Platform (GDP) is becoming a de-facto platform for software developers to rapidly prototype automotive solutions and to show their innovations to their management and to commercial prospects. The GDP has also become an increasingly mature starting point for commercial in-vehicle infotainment and connected car commercial software projects.

As a result, the Alliance needs a senior individual with a proven track record of software product management and development, ideally in an open source context, with the ability to effectively lead essential technical teams responsible for code development and tooling.

GENIVI’s Software Product Development General Manager will engage with technical and marketing leaders in the Alliance to develop a GDP product roadmap and to package the GDP such that it is easily enhanced, adopted, and marketed.

The Software Product Development General Manager will also have a supervisory role over technical resources managing GENIVI’s IT infrastructure and collaborate tooling as well as both contracted and volunteer code project maintainers who execute code commits to GENIVI’s open source software projects.

The role requires proven familiarity with software product development, in a extensive collaborative project with multiple parties, or in an open source context using community-accepted guidelines and procedures.  The role will involve managing a conduit for patches, fixes, and updates from upstream projects that resolve security problems, fix bugs, and introduce new features.  Translating this conduit into release plans and strategies is also expected.

The GENIVI Alliance desires this individual to be independent, not the employee of an automotive OEM or their software suppliers, so as not to be influenced by a single company’s own product planning or delivery. Effective verbal and written (English) communication skills are also required.

This position is considered a full-time equivalent contract. Even though a virtual role, a geographic location of Portland, Oregon is preferred.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience with connected and embedded software (preferably in an consumer electronics or automotive context)
  • Multi-year experience collaborating with software architects and open source developers in a product development context
  • Excellent product management skills resulting in timely and successful accomplishment of tasks and projects, including releases and updates
  • Able to manage complex relationships and requirements from a mixture of leaders, members, and volunteers, in the community and the Alliance, and to drive consensus
  • Able to explain highly technical topics and simplify them to be understood by a less-technical audience
  • A good speaker/presenter to Alliance management and to conferences and technical media
  • Available to travel worldwide (up to 15% of the time).

GENIVI is currently taking applications for this contract role.  Applicants shall send a recent CV/Resume to scrumb at genivi dot org with details of experience.
